Melatonin, a hormone naturally produced by the brain, regulates sleep-wake cycles. When the body doesn't produce enough, sleep disturbances can occur. Factors like shift work, jet lag, stress, and exposure to light can reduce melatonin production.  

Melatonin Supplements: Safe and Effective?

While melatonin supplements can help improve sleep, they're not regulated as strictly as prescription drugs. Studies suggest they're generally safe for short-term use but may have side effects like headaches, dizziness, or nausea.  

How to Take Melatonin:

  • Dosage: Typically 1-5 mg. 
  • Timing: Take 30 minutes before bed.
  • Avoid driving or using machinery within 5 hours.
  • Shift workers: Consider taking it at the end of your shift.

Precautions:

  • Consult a doctor before taking melatonin, especially if you have autoimmune diseases, are pregnant or breastfeeding, take certain medications, or have conditions like diabetes.
  • Avoid using melatonin if you're taking blood thinners, high blood pressure medication, or contraceptive drugs.  
  • Remember: While melatonin can be helpful, it's essential to address underlying sleep issues and maintain healthy sleep habits.
